The booking arrangements were handled extremely well and the information and documentation provided by Railsavers was excellent. I will be recommending the service!
Mr Kellett, September 2013

Hi Charlotte- Thanks for the upgrade on ferry coming home from Holland we actually ended with a 2 berth outside "window" cabin and my priority parking was behind cones with 3 other cars... brilliant!

We actually recommended Railsavers to plenty of others!

SO thanks again - my wife (through seeing the Rhine valley on the train) wants another trip! So i will be in touch!
Mr Forsyth (June 2013)

We have just returned from a superb two trip to Tuscany. I wanted to thank you and your team for organizing both the rail journey and ferry.
Most importantly to say how pleased with everything, staff on ferry and train were excellent, especially on the train a good bunch of youngsters.
Very good meal on the train, produced from a very small kitchen !

Thank you once again,
Mr and Mrs Bunting (June 2013)

Charlotte/Debbie,
Just a wee word to thank you for all the help in booking the ferry and sleeper motorail train from Den Bosch, to Alessandria, in May/June.
Everything went very well. Great trip. Lovely meal in the restaurant car, going down the Rhine....fab views. Please let me know when the bookings open for next years services. We quite fancy the new service to Slovenia next year.

Regards
Andy and Sheilah Deans - Kilconquhar, Fife.

This Railsavers Pullman dining service changes a train journey into a completely unique dining experience.

There absolutely nothing better than having your food served, silver service while enjoying the amazing Rhine and countryside  views. Highly recommended!
Cathy Burns Birtley Co Durham (March 2013)

Dear David,

Thank you to Railsavers for setting up everything so thoroughly for our return journeys Netherlands/Italy recently. All went calmly and smoothly and without a hitch of any sort. It was a thoroughly pleasant way to travel and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful: nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them all. The meals were both excellent and with the Rhine in one direction and Lakes Como and Lugano in the other, they could have charged a premium charge for spectacular views!

I have already recommended the service to many people and shall certainly be using it again as often as possible in the future. Thanks to you all at Railsavers for a great experience.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the updates on train times etc. In the event we were a little late getting the car off the train in sHertogenbosch but it did not matter as we still had plenty of time to board the ferry at Rotterdam. We felt for some people who had tight schedules driving to Calais, especially as there were delays offloading the vehicles in the station.

Our experience on the ferries and motorail was very positive. Prompt loading, clean rooms, good food and comfortable travel. Dinner watching the castles on the Rhine was quite delightful and I filled the car up for the first time in Florence, a week after leaving Manchester. It really was a magical holiday, with an unforgettable wedding in San Gimignano.

The resort you recommended in Colleoli was perfect for relaxing after a busy couple of weeks. We loved the spectacular setting, the peaceful layout and the ambience of the place. Food was good quality and the pool clean and refreshing.

Of the other places we stayed, you may wish to note: Hotel Donna Camilla Savelli in Rome - a little gem; beautifully situated, it has a lovely cloistered garden where breakfast is served and magnificent architecture; the staff are delightful. From our room on the fourth floor we had a stunning view over the City. The wedding was held at Villa Ducci near San Gimignano; a good location just outside the town, lovely swimming pool and very friendly people. We also stayed at Ca Lucano, an agriturismo farm near Arezzo. We could not have been made to feel more welcome and the setting is spectacular in the hills overlooking stunning countryside.
We'll let you know when we are planning our next Odyssey!
Kind regards

The stewardess on the train was very helpful.....
....Overall the experience was great. We had a really enjoyable time on the train and they were very efficient at loading and unloading.
....The food was fine, service was great and we would and are recommending it as a great way to get down to Italy.
Mr and Mrs J Smithson Aug 2012

Many thanks for arranging the trip for us on the AutoSlaap Trein -  it was first class. Our 2 berth cabin was very good, the air-con was a godsend and we also got some sleep! Also I endorse your recommendation to use the dining car as the floodlit castles on the Rhine at night are enchanting and on the way back the journey through Switzerland is magnificent from a comfy seat whilst dining. The advantage of using the train is highlighted as you see all the cars queuing for the St Gothard pass as you sail unhindered by!

A long journey but a good trip.
Regards,
Tim Thomas.

Many thanks to you and charlotte for all your help with our journies.the ferry crossings were fine, all went to plan.
The highlight of our holiday was the car railtrain experience.crossing to rotterdam meant we were able to get there in very good time.the couchette was veery comfortable, the beds were surprisingly comfortableand we slept well.the food in the restaurant was delicious and we were glad we had opted for the first sitting as the scenery was stunning.we were only sorry that the train went through switzerland in the night as there must be more great scenery.

A young lad put the car on for us, the staff at the station were very helpful and available.getting the car off was a bit nerve racking at first  not having done anything like that before.
the number of miles the train did for us made a big difference to our journey to our destination,it made it seem so much less far.
we would recommend it both from an exciting experience and a good way of getting to southern italy with your own car.
regards

Hi Charlotte & Lorraine,

Just to let you know that doing the train from ‘sHergertenbosch to Livorno at the beginning of June was a truly wonderful way to start our motorbike tour of Bosnia. After leaving Tamworth on Thursday evening, we were sipping a beer on the Adriatic coast of Croatia on Sunday afternoon and as fresh as a daisy.
The service all round is efficient and friendly, from the moment we arrived at the station in Holland to when I rode the ‘bike off in the midday heat of Livorno. On board, the steward could not have been any more attentive and the meal in the dining car as the train travelled down the West bank of the Rhine was a delight.
Finding this service has opened our horizons (I don’t think riding on motorways is fun anymore) so I am sure we will be making another booking with you.

Kind regards
Bob, from Birmingham

Have just returned from that one way Motorail to Livorno you sorted for me. I booked months ago but want you to know that it was all that you said. It was excellent, ‘better than the ‘Rocky Mountaineer’ my wife says! (did Canada in 2010) It felt so personal, from calling you and speaking to Lorraine, right thru til Nicole waved us off the station concourse in Livorno. Great service, which I thought was a thing of the Past. We’ll do both ways in 2013. Send us details when you know them.

We returned yesterday from out trip to Italy.  I just wanted to let you know that we had a super time and that the arrangements which you made for us, went perfectly.  The staff on the AutoSlaap Trein were first-rate and the evening meal hugely enjoyable.  (I slept well and did not awake until we were in the region of Mainz!).  The boarding and unloading arrangements required a bit of initiative on our part but it was all really rather easy.

Thanks again for looking after our arrangements so well.

No problems for us on what was an excellent trip. Thought ferry and train were excellent. Dinner service on train was well worth it. People loading the bikes were really good.

Just recently arrived home safely after our trip around Europe. The highlight was the week in Tuscany- brilliant!

I just wanted to say though that the rail trip from Holland to Livorno arranged by you was excellent-- no problems and really good service--the highlight was Dinner in the Dining Car going down the Rhine.
We would recommend it to anyone. Many thanks to you for arranging it on our behalf-- much appreciated.

THE EASY WAY HOME – LET THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN

For our first solo sojourn into Europe we left home after work on a pleasant Thursday evening.  We spent the first of 17 nights away from home in the not very glamorous or exotic Rugby but it was a start toward our ultimate destination of Croatia Harley Days in Biograd.

The Friday morning traffic on the M25 was surprisingly kind meaning that we got to Folkestone very early for the Channel Tunnel train we had booked on.  The Channel Tunnel was a first for us.  We had “paid” with Tesco points so it almost felt like it was free!  The automated check in gave us the option of an earlier train which we took.  Unfortunately after a car spontaneously combusted in another carriage we ended up having to switch trains and eventually left at more or less the original booked time.

Lewis had planned a less than obvious route down through France, Bavaria, Austria and Slovenia to Croatia!  We were blessed with dry and mostly sunny weather.

The bike must like France – she spent the first night in the courtyard of the hotel next a carriage that was set up for wedding photos and the second night at the bottom of the stairwell of the hotel in Strasbourg.  It took us ages to get away the next morning as of course everyone staying the hotel had seen her and wanted to talk to Lewis while we were getting ready to leave.

We had a lovely afternoon in Zell am See.  We hired an electric boat and went for a slow spin round the lake.  The next day saw us on the Gross Glockner   - if you ever find yourself in that area pay the toll it is worth it.  The views were fantastic and the hairpins were numerous!

Slovenia proved to be a beautiful country with better roads than expected.  It was also considerably cheaper than anywhere else we went on the trip.

We knew that Croatia was beautiful having been before.  It didn’t disappoint.  We had a fantastic time at the rally meeting up with Tom & Jeanette Penny and Mark & Barbara Smithers. As always I was fascinated to see where other people had come from.  I was again struck by the fact that lots of European Harley riders seem to be younger than in the UK.

Our equally unconventional route home took us up into Italy where we had a night in the Dolomites which were stunning.  We had a night in Lake Garda (which was rather quieter than the last time we were there for the Rally in 2008!) followed by 2 nights in Lake Como.

The final first of the trip was the autotrain!   With the memories of past wet rides north all too clear when Lewis saw an advert in MCN for a train from northern Italy to Holland it seemed like the obvious thing to give it a try.

We got to Alessandria in good time and had hoped to go to the Harley dealership. But it being Italy where they take their siesta very seriously it was closed so we had lunch instead.  There were more bikes on the train than I expected from the UK as well as Holland and Germany.  The cars and bikes go on special double decker carriages.  Lewis rode the bike on and saw it was fastened down.

We had booked a 2 bed berth compartment which was very comfortable if compact but we found room for our kit and overnight bag. It was set up as a sofa in the day and the second bed (a bunk) was turned down by the steward when we were ready for bed.  Lewis was able to enjoy the scenery without watching the road as we steamed by Lake Maggiore.  I am glad that we had booked for dinner in the restaurant car.  The food was excellent and sitting on a train eating steak, drinking wine and watching Swiss Alps go by will live long in the memory.   We had an airline style breakfast on the train before we arrived in Hertgenbosch.

It was not cheap but for us (especially me) well worth it. We were able to stay south for much longer.  We avoided what would have been a wet ride north and only saw rain for an hour near Milan.  We booked through Railsavers which is based in Blackpool.  We are planning a trip to Montenegro in September and will be taking the easy way home again.

We were minding our own business waiting to get on the ferry at Rotterdam when a familiar looking Harley rider appeared – it was Ickey who was on his way home from Germany so we enjoyed the last night of our trip in good company.

Just completed my third Motorail booking in three years and looking forward to 2012 as much as the first time! Their recommendation about staying the night before in a local hotel in Holland was brilliant, and with Lorraine staying there herself I felt very re-assured! Thanks for all the good advice you always come up with- its very helpful.

Many thanks to Charlotte for a super efficient service.  She booked our North Sea Ferries for us too - great cabin on the Hull to Rotterdam leg of the trip!  The overnight sleeper train to Italy was good fun - we had a compartment for 2, plenty of room and bed was comfy.  We ate in the Restaurant Car and had a table for two despite one no being available when we booked - so a nice surprise.  Having driven from the UK to Italy on more than one occasion, the driver - my husband - enjoyed drinking and not driving very much indeed.  We booked only 2 weeks before we were due to travel and Charlotte still managed to play a blinder with the bookings. I would definitely take this journey again - airports?  No comparison to the relaxed, enjoyable and stress free ferry and train trip that we enjoyed this August.

“Eating in the restaurant car that evening was an unexpected bonus. For much of the meal, we were travelling down the east side of the Rhine and enjoyed some dramatic glimpses of orange-lit castles on distant hills and huge barges looming out of the darkness ploughing south.
Sleep in the small cabin though was elusive and punctuated by station announcements in the dead of night and jolts as the locomotive was changed at the borders. But the staff were convivial and efficient and we arrived dead on time in north Italy.”

The original booking was managed in a real friendly style, it made the whole experience of managing 6 mates a lot easier.. Arriving at the train station was also well managed, we were allowed to wait in a private area for 2 latecomers and given endless cups of free tea and coffee before placing our cars on the train (which attracted a lot of attention as there were six Caterhams), a real friendly guy showed us to our accommodation which unfortunately wasn't good, 6 blokes all with luggage in one compartment clearly doesn't work, however the guy (who was to stay with us to Alessandria) pulled out all the stops and allowed us to spread out into 2 other spare compartments – a real hero.
Would I use again? Yes I would, but I think I would pay extra to ensure there was a maximum of 3 in a compartment.
Tony Birkbeck (June 2011)

When we first decided to use the railway to go from Holland to Italy, we wondered what nightmares we had let ourselves in for. Using Charlotte and Railsavers made it so easy and straight forward. Even when we changed our route late in the day it was no trouble. I would certainly use them again and would happily recommend them to anyone else planning similar journeys.
Thanks very much for your help.
Chris Aldous (June 2011)

Thank you for the first class service you provided me. You took the strain from organising my channel crossing (with perfect timings and cheaper than I could get) and with the auto car train booking. I had a cabin to myself and the meal was extremely good (as you promised). The journey was smooth and very picturesque and the staff were all great.
I travelled on my own from North Wales to the Greek island of Kefalonia on my Ducati sports bike. You helped create a perfect trip that I will remember forever.
Andrew Aird (June 2011)

Dear Charlotte
We thoroughly enjoyed our car train journey from Livorno to Den Bosch in June The train left on time ,was clean and comfortable and the meal on board excellent.
All staff was very helpful and train arrived on time after very pleasant journey. Cars unloaded promptly and we were on our way very quickly.
Peter Franklin Hertfordshire (June 2011)

Great way to travel from the Netherlands to Italy and to give the MG a rest before the mountains she had to climb.
Rail Savers MD David Evans gave us amazing personal service before we travelled sorting out a problem with our dinner booking (and I would now recommend the first seating for dinner after all). You don't go on a train for the best dining experience in the world but pudding views down the Rhine were spectacular.
Staff on the train was all delightful (especially our cabin carer).
Loading on and off was efficient with lots of helpful tourist info available when we disembarked in Italy.
Good value and a highly recommended stress free way to travel.
Kath and Mike Acres (June 2011)

We thoroughly enjoyed our return journey to Alessandria. The train crew were wonderful, all the ones we met were extremely helpful, interesting to talk to and very enthusiastic.

The services was efficient, the staff friendly and knowledgeable, and the train ride, and dining car in particular were excellent.
We have recommended Railsavers and the trip to many friends.

Hi there,
Just wanted to drop a quick line to say thanks for all your help booking the AutoSlaap and to leave a quick message for the blog.
What a wonderful way to travel! We've been regular travellers by car to the South of France, but with our first trip to Italy we decided to take the stress out of the journey and book the AutoSlaap train. I could not recommend the experience highly enough. From booking to driving the car off the train at Alessandria, the whole experience was very smooth and a real pleasure. The train was older than we had expected, but very comfortable (we were in a couchette) and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. We didn't book the restaurant, but found the dinner very good - airplane fodder, but tasty, hot and good portions. The trip down the Rhine was one to treasure and waking up in Italy -with a quick stop at Domodossola (07.30 in the morning, with a view of the Alps and the sun beating down on the platform) simply wonderful! To top it all we only had a 90 minute journey to our holiday apartment in Liguria. So the perfect start to the holiday and the perfect way to travel.
Cass, Paul, Phoebe and Freya Martin (July 2011)

Just to let you know that we have returned from our trip.
The arrangements for the Eurotunnel and motorail went very smoothly and we enjoyed the experience very much - thanks for all your help !

The journey was wonderful - comfortable & with great views - so much easier than driving all the way. We were well looked after by our carriage attendant. Also appreciated the facilities at den Bosch & enjoyed exploring the town, having arrived early.

We had such a relaxing and enjoyable journey from Holland to Italy on board the over night crossing on the train. The service in the restaurant was excellent and so was the food. Taking in the scenery whilst we were dining in the restaurant really made our holiday complete. The cabins were comfortable and we had a good nights sleep ready to enjoy the rest of our holiday once in Italy. I would definitely recommend this and have recommended this too many people. We would certainly travel this way again and Italy has become our favourite holiday destination.
Thanks again, we had a great time
Suzanne and David, Sheffield, England

I’ve been on holiday for a few weeks and it was one of the best holidays I’ve ever had. One reason is the Auto Slaap train. Since inter-railing in the eighties I’ve wanted to cross Europe by train again and this year it fitted into our plans to go to Italy.

Just back from our first Motorail trip and ready to go again!
Just to say, Lorraine was superb with us, telling us exactly as it was. No over-promising and she was dead right about the dining experience. Yes, I booked that second sitting as recommended. Want to go further now in 2011 so please send Livorno details and we will cross Sea France again.
Thanks a million!

Hi Lorraine / David,
Just got back from hols which where great.

However I think you ought to allow a bigger time gap from leaving Den Bosch and getting to Calais.  Whilst the train arrived at D.B. on time at 0945 it was 11.30 before the bike was finally unloaded. Obviously getting to Calais on time was scuppered. It didn't matter as Eurotunnel easily rebooked us but there where others at Calais who had had to wait as the train was full.

Ed. We have taken your comments on board and are currently reviewing our timings.

Hi Railsavers!
The service is first class and will certainly book again. My only (small) gripe would be the signposting as you near the station in Den Bosch, which is a bit vague. Once there and loaded, the square which is just outside the station is a joy! Loads of lovely restaurants and cafes, it was really nice.
We had a short power cut on the train but the complimentary drinks and free wine offered more than recompensed for this.

Hi  Becky ........I've be meaning to give you a call to say thanks for the Motorail  arrangements etc -- really great and a much better way to travel than trashing down the autostrada -- shame we went through the Alps in darkness but it was a full moon so still atmospheric -- only real problem was waiting for the French guys at Avignon to lower the ramps took over  30 minutes for the supervisor to arrive and do it whilst the “lads” just sat down!

One satisfied Alfa driver!   August 2009

Ed:- we are sorry about that delay. It wasn't normal and the guy got delayed in traffic.

We booked the return leg from Bologna to s'Hertogenbosch only, as we had made our way down to Italy via a long drive, and it was good to have the prospect of an easy journey homewards. As stated, it's good to have one's car space for bring back the goodies from abroad.  Our booking was well handled by Rebecca, who patiently coped with various amendments, and emailed us ticket details.  We were forewarned of a late change to the train timing which affected our tunnel booking. We have travelled previously on the German service, Frankfurt - Livorno: this service, Bologna - Den Bosch, was much better in many ways.  Comfortable family couchette; friendly and helpful steward (and good to be able to order extra drinks from her on a v.
hot day), meals in compartment were really very good. Less noise and jolting during journey than on other service.  Loading at Bologna was  made harder by the late arrival of incoming train (insufficient passing and access space for offloading and incoming vehicles), and unloading at Den Bosch was quite slow - overall about an hour.  As long as you're prepared for the loading/ unloading waits, it's not a problem (possible to wander into Bologna for food/drink after loading; or a good air conditioned waiting room in station).  We scheduled in some time in Bologna, which was a lovely city to view; Den Bosch looked pretty, but we had to get on.  Journey to tunnel straightforward, but as others have noted, the Belgian motorways are a drag, and the middle of the car journey was just something to be endured.  But the memories of Swiss views in the night and German/Dutch countryside in morning were wonderful.  We hope to travel again with this service, and were overall very impressed.
Thank you, Railsavers, for all your help and advice.

To  all the staff at Railsavers,
My wife’s parents had used your company for many years. To be honest I had no idea about the service, I thought you either fly or drive and they were you only options you had. After last year’s Lyon traffic jam debacle (6 hours to pass) I was determined not to suffer the same hideous end to a relaxing holiday. My wife booked your service and took the recommendation of Avignon to Holland as opposed to the French train which you advised us had dropped the high standards it had many years ago.  I cannot be thankful enough with  the contact your team kept with us up to and during our holiday. You managed to facilitate a carriage for just the 2 of us and get us seated for the late meal booking. My wife treated it as some kind of Agatha Christie ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ journey, we laughed and unlike the normal train journeys we British are used to, relaxed. The restaurant food was excellent as was the service with a multi-lingual staff that were both friendly and professional. I just wanted to thank you all as a team for your advice and what you managed to achieve with such short notice. You can add my wife and I to your list of regular customers for the future.
Thank You
Keith & Joanne Bonner

I have just read the review on the website www.seat61.com Don't know if you remember but we travelled with you in June with 5 motorbikes. His review is absolutely correct. We ate in your dining car and it was superb. The food was as good as any fine dining eatery in London and the staff were so friendly.
In the seat61 review he mentions about this offer to have 3 wines. You don't mention that and you should. Its a novel idea-excellent but think we have another bottle of red as well!. We shared a six berth couchette even though there was only 5 but the extra bed was great storage for all our gear.Think you recommended that but it was really good. One last word.Travel that Harwich ferry to Hook. That kicked the holiday off in good style. We'll re-run the trip in 2010. Peter Donaldson  September 2009

I booked my Honeymoon travel through Railsavers because we wanted to go to Italy but didn’t fancy the flights or the drive. In essence this looks to be a perfect solution and in light of the hugely increased prices for hire cars an increasingly popular one , I’m sure.

The booking was easy and the staff very helpful. The paperwork arrived on time and the directions and instructions contained within were clear and we imagined simple.

The arrival at Den Bosch proved the pudding. We followed instructions and some excellent road signs and arrived at the check in easily. Our papers were processed and we were parked ready to drive onto the train. The loading was efficient and the instructions on the platform clear. We were loaded by 15.30 , on enquiry we were told that the train itself would arrive at 19.00. Although we knew the difference between check in and departure was a couple of hours we were not ready for a very basic waiting room, poor toilets and a long wait. This is not anyone’s fault ( although the facilities could be much, much better) and there are lockers in order to leave luggage. What is required is more clarity in the paperwork and the recommendation that a person does not check in for loading until the very last minute therefore minimizing the wait.
As it happened the train arrived at 18.30 and we were welcomed by a very helpful woman who settled us into our berth and took our dinner order.
At 19.10 we noticed that the car transporter had not moved – a problem with the brakes. By 19.40 the brakes had been cured but ‘someone’ had been seen on the roof of the train and the police went through the entire train. We left at 20.10 .
Our dinner booking was 21.30 down. At 21.45 our pre ordered food arrived – it was delicious. The meal took just over an hour for the three courses and during sweet the train broke down.
We went to bed ( which had been turned down in our absence – thankyou) whilst the engine was being replaced.
.
We awoke to the splendour of the Swiss Alps. Our hostess took our bedding away and brought us breakfast ( a somewhat stodgy affair but filling nonetheless). I enquired about the heat in the night and the reply was ‘I turned off the air conditioning for safety reasons’ I have no idea what she meant but they were very insistent about us locking our compartments at night. However if an airconditioning system has to be turned off for our safety I’m not sure it’s working properly.
All through the journey our hostess kept us informed of our delayed arrival time and met our every drink and snack need.
We arrived in Bologna at 13.40 only half an hour late. The disembarkation took less than an hour. Marvellous.

The return trip was looked forward to as a gentle way to return from a lovely holiday.
Finding the loading point was trickier than Den Bosch because of the lack of signage around the station but Railsavers directions were clear and therefore invaluable.
We arrived at 16.00 and were loaded by 16.05 – brilliant but now we had to wait four hours for our compartment. Bologna station has a left luggage department that is open until 22.00 – perfect. A wonderful walk into town and a beer . This could be highlighted in the pre tour paperwork in order that people know and understand that the facility existed.
The train arrived at 19.30 and we departed on time at 20.10.

The pretour paperwork noted that there was only one sitting in the restaurant car because of the delayed departure. The train departed at 20.10. I questioned this with Railsavers and this was confirmed as correct. On receiving our berth the very excellent Harry who was the carriage host informed us that dinner would be late because of the late departure and that we were booked for 20.45.
At 20.20 Harry said we could go through. We were second in the dining car and our order was duly taken. The food was lovely although the main course was fairly dry.
We left the dining car at 22.20 – 2 hours after arriving.
The beds had been turned down back in the compartment and we slept very soundly.
Breakfast exactly as before and Harry very conscientious with the coffees etc.
We arrived in Den Bosch at 15.00 some 2 hours later than our original booking. We were unloaded by 16.00!

This is an excellent service that needs to rub some polish into its operation. The paperwork and service from Railsavers is excellent and the staff on the train also great. The rolling stock is aging but still very comfortable although the toilets could do with an update. Breakfast in the dining car would be a good moneyspinner as would serving the food reasonably quickly in order to maximize bar takings in the ‘Grand café’.
With better communication at both stations and better facilities at Den Bosch in particular this service could be fantastic.
I would and have recommended it to others

Dear Mr Rumley

We have just returned from our holiday in Umbria which was a great success.  The journey out by Motorail to Bologna went very well. Our compartment was comfortable and the service very friendly and helpful.  The dinner was good too.  We only wished that we had set our alarm to wake us up a little earlier so that we could enjoy more of the Swiss mountain scenery!  Although we enjoyed driving back through France we would definitely take the outward journey with Motorail again, as it made a much more relaxing start to our holiday.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Best wishes,

Lesley Smurthwaite

The food and the scenery - the Rhine are always out of this world!  What an adventure. Why do people fly?

Just to say how much we enjoyed our trip from Den Bosch to Avignon and return. Railsavers staff were unfailingly helpful and friendly throughout the ticket booking procedure.

The journey from Calais to Den Bosch was a bit longer than we had expected - especially taxing around the Antwerp ringroad.  It took more than 3  hours.

On arrival at Den Bosch station, the Dutch staff were extremely friendly, spoke English and drove our car onto the train as we had requested - otherwise you drive it on yourself.  Sparkling wine and bottles of  mineral water were waiting for us in our compartment.

Dinner on the train was very civilized and recommended, then we retired to comfortable beds for the night, made up for us by our excellent  English speaking steward who delivered a simple breakfast in the morning.  He was cheery and helpful throughout as were all the Dutch staff.

We arrived in Avignon in lovely hot sun and only had to wait about half an hour for our car to be off-loaded and at the same station.

All in all, we thought the service from initial booking, through to arrival, was excellent.
The only disappointment was that we were unable to take our 4x4 as we had anticipated because with its fixed roof rails it exceeded the maximum height.  The journey was vastly more comfortable and enjoyable than we had experienced on a previous French motorail trip.

When I booked yesterday Emma asked if I have any personal views on 2008 Motorail so here goes.

Booked your Motorail when normally we can from Calais but for personal reasons we wanted the 2 bed sleepers which have been taken off.
Are we glad we did book!.The restaurant carriage was like something from days when service counted. Our hostesses and Yan the train manager
Were outstanding. We had forgotten to buy some water before boarding. I mentioned to our hostess and she gave us one each-free.

The sleepers are good. Next time I would take some ear plugs to blank out all the line noise but I still slept.Emma asked if there were any down sides..we thought the journey from the Tunnel would be a trudge but it wasn’t and that Hertogenbosch, excuse spelling, was an absolute delight. Recommend to your customers to get off earlt and spend some time in the town.

Top marks go to the Dutch staff on the train. Same to you Emma for handling our booking. That was a nice thought calling us on our mobile when were worried that my wife was better(She was ill the previous week) Also what was excellent was arrival at Avignon. In on time at 07.34am and they unloaded the cars and we drove away.On the Calais services you arrive about 5.30am but they are getting you out of bed at 4.30am as the train doesn’t stop for long. Then they bus you about 5 miles to get your car. Terrible!

Ask the train company why they don’t go to Frejus?  From up both.Thank you Emma

You didn’t mention that we would be served food when we got on the train. I thank you but I think we would of benefitted if we’d known. I’d also mention that the tickets should be sent at least 4 weeks before departure. I think you could stress more than you do that you can take dogs. Had we known “Belle” could have come Anyway all that said – Keep us posted for 2009.

Ed: We try to make your “welcome aboard” dish and aperitif a surprise! But we will listen to you. Late tickets are the bain of our lives here. We will tell the Rail people again. Pets can travel – Sorry if we didn’t display this well

We booked with Railsavers on their Motorail when somebody in our village in France recommended Railsavers and we telephoned off chance to them in England from France. What a difference to the French Motorail!. Railsavers’s Manager Rebecca was absolutely fabulous.  We only booked on the Wednesday- 4 days before travel!.. telephoning Railsavers from our Villa.
They couldn’t have been more helpful, checking even if there were any vegetarians.(It transpired that you receive a simple meal on embarkation and Railsavers wanted to make sure nobody was offending with a meat dish-unbelievable).The ticket, directions were e mailed to us and Rebecca even telephoned to see if we had any queries. Good old fashioned service!
On the day when were were returning from Avignon it was an ‘absolute boiler’. I knew where the station was as we normally travel Motorail with French Motorail-never again!.
We arrived at Avignon Motorail station in what seemed like 40 degrees!. It was just about 5pm.It was so hot so after handing over the car we were wandering around. The train staff noticed us and were concerned. This English speaking train attendant,(I think she was a student) told me and my wife to go and sit in the shade on the station and she brought us an ice cold drink each!.. as a courtesy. We departed at 7pm, not hanging about til midnight like the other service and within an hour we were sat in dining car, white tablecloth and enjoying an excellent Salmon dish and feeling relaxed. The food was excellent and the sleeper cabins were like the old 2/3 berths Wagon Lits carriages we used to book with the French-T2s
I would recommend Railsavers and there Motorail to anybody..Just try ‘em

Thanks for a great trip, trains were spot on and on time, tickets arrived well in advance and at a great price considering the euro rate far better than buying direct. I will be using you again for my trip to Italy next year.

We travelled via Autoslaap through Railsavers this summer for the first time from S-Hertz to Bologna and back - we loved it.  It is the only way to travel big distances.  We were lulled to sleep after dinner in the dining car and woke up to a brilliant sunny day in Bologna.  The staff on the train were all friendly and polite.  We had complimentary sparkling wine when we arrived in our cabin and our own steward to look after us.  While I am a nervous traveller and constantly expect things to go wrong, everything worked to plan, even though I made several nervy phone calls to Rebecca Taylor at Railsavers before we set off.  There was one tiny hitch - the train engine broke down on the way back and  the Dutch company arranged for another engine which arrived a few hours later.  We arrived later back in Holland the next day but staff were helpful and informed us what was going on.  Oh and by the way we loved S-Hertz or Den Bosch - we arrived early on the Saturday so we droped the car off on the train and then enjoyed a pleasant afternoon in the town - loads of restaurants and wonderful shops. Ed:- S’Hertogenbosch or Den Bosch is excellent, well kept secret. We agree with our client…a real gem of a city. Thanks for reminding us!

My girlfriend and I tried motorail this summer, cutting the hard work out of the journey to Italy.  First time we’d tried motorail and were pleasantly surprised by the relaxed and pleasant service from arriving at the station in S-Hertz all the way to Bologna.  Great staff, clean and decently stocked train. Furthermore, the staff at Railsavers were great to deal with.  Returned on French motorail (Brive to Calais), separately from the Railsavers crew and the service wasn’t a patch on the Dutch one (dirty train, poorly-stocked, 2 hour wait at the Calais end and a disgraceful ‘breakfast’).  My advice:  get Railsavers to book you on the service from Holland, avoid French motorail, and see if you can sneak a bottle of decent wine into the cabin on the train.

This Motorail service is far better than the others, albeit you have to drive to Den Bosch (Which is worth the drive!) This was our first year with Railsavers and we travelled to Bologna. The only problem was late delivery of our tickets. They did come, but only at the last moment. It seems an inherent problem…but all was well in the end.
I recommend this service, especially the sleepers, restaurant carriage and the really sensible timings.

Ed:- We share client’s concerns re: ticketing. They ALWAYS arrive, but we are working with the Rail Company to improve this for 2009. The difficulty is that the Dutch passengers don’t bother with tickets, they rely solely on a reference number like Ryanair/Easyjet.

Just back from Livorno and want to pass on our review of your service. It was nice to experience your sleepers after using Paris-Nice for last 5 years.
Restaurant car was far better than we expected and the staff were so willing. My wife asked for hers to be lightly cooked and it was done to perfection.
Can you not start your services in May for half term. There are many in our village in Italy that would use it.Please send us 2009 details if you have them and will you provisionally book us on exactly same travel days as this year.Well done Railsavers.

 Loading & unloading very efficient.
Sleeping car staff very pleasant, helpful and like most Dutch, speak good English.
Dining car staff very friendly, but food not quite as good as a couple of years ago.
Overall remains the best of the services we have used down the years (Ie German, Dutch, Belgian & French, the last of which are easily the worst).

Railsavers arranged our trip from Den Bosch to Bologna in June of this year (2008).  David Evans and the team at Railsavers were extremely responsive, helpful and considerate.  I can't imagine we would ever take an autotrain in Europe again without making the arrangements through railsavers.  The key point to take away is that with railsavers you're less exposed to the particular nuances/problems/language differences of the train services themselves because David will help you navigate through that process and sort things out.  I'd highly recommend David to anyone.
